Ryanair Launches Malta Routes
Low-cost airline Ryanair is offering its clients free trips to Malta as it launches the operation of three new routes to the island, with the passengers having to pay only the taxes.
While the special offer is valid only for those who book their flights before midnight on Monday, the first flight that the company will be making to Malta will only take place on October 31st. Nevertheless, the company is expecting a huge demand for its offer.
The airline has recently become the world’s first airline to carry four million passengers internationally in a month. With the new routes to Malta, which will become the 24th country in which the company operates, the total number of routes served by the low-cost carrier has increased to 379.
On a year round basis, Ryanair will fly to Malta a daily service from London Luton and a three times weekly service from Pisa as from October 31st, 2006. Another three times weekly service from Dublin will commence on February 9th, 2007.
“Ryanair is delighted to announce these new routes to Malta, which we hope will be the commencement of a long and growing relationship with the island. The Government has shown courage and initiative in inviting proposals from low cost airlines and we are delighted to have succeeded with our plans for these three new routes,” Deputy Chief Executive Michael Cawley said while announcing the new routes.
He went on to say that the airline is expected to carry over 200,000 passengers in the first year on the three routes, with over 110,000 passengers expected on the London Luton routes and 47,000 each from Pisa and Dublin.
“These passengers will save over £20m as against the average fares charged by high fare airlines to and from the island, as our fares will undercut those of the existing high fare operators by up to 90 per cent net of taxes and charges,” Mr. Cawley concluded.
